Using the structure created by the Bacteremia Zero Project, we propose to apply a set of recommendations to prevent Ventilator-Associated Pneumonias (VAPs) and reinforce the procedures in place to monitor the integrated safety measures package now used in Spanish ICUs.
Decrease the average national incidence density rate (ID) of VAPs to less than 9 episodes per 1000 days of mechanical ventilation. This represents a 40% decrease of the average rate of incidence recorded for 2000-2008 in the Spanish ICUs and a 25% reduction compared with 2009-2010.
- Promote and improve a culture of safety in the Intensive Care Units of the National Health System.
- Maintain and reinforce the network of ICUs that implement safety practices of proven efficacy.
