Roundtable: Experiences in Patient Safety

A roundtable on patient safety was held on December 17^th, 2010 in the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality during the 3^rd Master on Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality. The Health Regions presented their different experiences in this area.

The Citizens Network is featured in the CIBERESP Bulletin

The Center for Biomedical Network Research, Epidemiology and Public Health dedicates a space in their newsletter nº 5 (December, 2010) to feature the Citizens Network of Patient Safety Trainers through the voices and experiences of the protagonists.

Pneumonia Zero Project presentation and Bacteremia Zero Project follow up

On March 22^nd the national, regional and local Bacteremia Zero Project coordinators met in Barcelona to present the Pneumonia Zero Project prepared by the SEMICYUC (the Spanish Society of Intensive, Critical and Coronary Medicine) and the SEEIUC ( the Spanish Society of Intensive Nursing Care and Coronary Care) in cooperation with the Quality Agency, and to share the updated data of bacteremia rates. Dr. Ingrid Morales (from the Belgium Public Health Institute) presented the data on HCAI occurrence in European ICUs as well as the strategies developed to control them.

Meeting of the Technical Committee on Patient Safety

On January 27^th the representatives of the Spanish Health Regions that comprise the Technical Committee on Patient Safety (PSS) within the National Health System (NHS) met in Madrid.

The Quality Agency presented a summary of the projects implemented within the NHS in 2010 and financed with decentralized funds to the Health Regions through the strategy funds and subsidies. The indicators proposed to evaluate the patient safety strategy were discussed and the actions to be developed during 2011 were presented.

Finally, the attendants were informed of the celebration of the 6^th International Conference on October 19-20 to coincide with the Cochrane Colloquium. The motto will be: “Scientific evidence for healthcare quality and patient safety.”

Resultados del proyecto Bacteriemia Zero

El pasado 27 de octubre se realizó la presentación oficial de los resultados del Proyecto Bacteriemia Zero en el Auditorio Ramón y Cajal de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

La Agencia de Calidad en colaboración con la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y la Sociedad Española de Medicina Intensiva y Cuidados Críticos (SEMICYUC) puso en marcha un proyecto de demostración a nivel del SNS para la prevención de las infecciones relacionadas con los catéteres centrales en las unidades de cuidados intensivos (UCI).

El objetivo principal era reducir la incidencia de la BRCV en un 40% respecto a la tasa media de los 5 años previos en las UCI españolas. Tras 18 meses de implantación podemos decir que el proyecto ha sido un éxito con una tasa de densidad de incidencia, medida por su mediana, que se ha reducido de 3.07 infecciones por 1000 días de catéter a 1.12 lo que supone disminuir el riesgo de este grave problema para los pacientes en más de un 50%.

El impacto para los pacientes puede resumirse en que se han evitado 742 episodios de sepsis, lo que permite estimar una reducción de 66 muertes por BRCV y un ahorro de casi 28 millones de euros para el Sistema Nacional de Salud.

Pero, por encima de las cifras, se ha conseguido crear una cultura de seguridad en las UCIs españolas fruto del desarrollo de un plan de seguridad integral que afecta no solo a las bacteriemias sino a toda la actividad clínica en estas unidades.

El proyecto Bacteriemia Zero ha contado con la participación de todas las comunidades autónomas, que se resume en 192 UCI y más de 14.000 profesionales de la medicina y la enfermería implicados tanto en la formación como en la implementación del proyecto.
