i-Salud

The new i-Salud newsletter has been created with the objective of offering updated, independent healthcare information to patients and citizens to assist them in making decisions on their health and to keep them informed.

The Ministry of Health and Social Policy has launched a new bulletin on health issues designed for patients and citizens. The objective of the i-Salud newsletter is to disseminate independent healthcare information, based on scientific evidence, which will enable patients and citizens to keep themselves informed and will help them to make decisions on their health.

Healthcare is increasingly concerned with the participation of the users of the health system (patients and citizens in general) in the decisions affecting them, thereby abandoning the role of passive receivers of information. However, this model of shared decisions requires that health system users must have access to valid information on their illnesses and ailments, in addition to the benefits and potential risks of therapeutic resources.

Independent, quality information

There is increasingly more information on health issues available to patients and citizens on the Internet. However, this information is not always reliable and often its scientific basis is poor. Moreover, keeping up-to-date with respect to the multitude of sources of information and electronic resources existing on the Internet requires an amount of time which is frequently not available. This is why it has become more necessary than ever for patients and citizens to receive independent, quality information to enable them to keep current with something so important to them as is their health.

The i-Salud newsletter identifies the principal developments and news of interest for patients and citizens. The selection of subjects and documents included is made on the basis of criteria in which relevancy, novelty and scientific evidence prevail in support of each news item. In addition, access to the original sources of the news is provided by means of links to the original text or to the reference website.

The information in the newsletter is presented in sections which include: current clinical and healthcare issues, scientific controversies, critical comments on the health information appearing in the press, resources for patients and citizens, assistance for returning to day-to-day routines after an illness and recommendations on healthy life habits.

i-Salud, published monthly, is a supplement to the Newsletters of the SNS (National Health System) Quality Agency prepared through a contract between the MSPS and Colaboración Cochrane Iberoamericana and is distributed free of charge by e-mail se.
